Fifty-eight enthusiastic campers joined us for Camp SSTAR 2009 this past summer with the goal of making friends and learning new skills for the home, school, and community. Enjoying many camping activities such as fishing, hiking, and crafts as well as working on an official news cast and yearbook, the campers were involved, energized, and excited to be a part of such a unique camp with the primary reward of lasting friendships.

Camp SSTAR was created to provide children with Asperger syndrome opportunities to learn and grow in many areas including social skills groups, communication, teamwork, leadership, and lasting friendships. Campers are assigned to groups including camera crew, editors, apprentice, on-air talent, photographers, producers, reporters and web-team.  Throughout the week, the older kids put together a news cast with a full script, detailed interviews, weather and more.  Kids learn a variety of social skills while interacting with their teams and engaging in various social activities throughout the week.  Lessons learned in the controlled environment of Camp SSTAR are easily transferable to real-world situations.

Summer camp for some children means staying away from home, swimming, hiking, fishing, and making friends.  For Camp SSTAR campers, it means that and a whole lot more.  Camp SSTAR delivers similar camp experiences as well as tools or keys for social success.  These keys are vital for communication, relationships, friendships, and most of all happiness.  These keys are made up of social skills that assist each camper as they go back to their families, their schools, and the community.  Used appropriately, these keys give them the opportunities that each of us have to be a part of a world that is very social, very loud, and very busy... in essence, the keys to success!
